Flare gun: Better for combat. Detonator: Loss of crits on burning targets really hurts if you don't have solid flame aim, reflects and positioning. Plus points - det jumping can opens up the flanks, which is great if you've got the backburner and good gamesense. It's easy to shut down any sort of pyro flank though.
