A 2004R is a better transmission because it's stronger and has better gear spacing. After that a TH400 and Gear Vendor is the way to go. The Gear vendors will give you a ratio of 0.78:1 and the 4L80E is slightly higher at 0.75:1. And as you said, the TH400 doesn't have a lockup torque converter. My TH400 was the short tailshaft model and the OD bolted onto that without issues.
