The changes to Google Workspace for Education were first announced back in early 2021. The account quotas (e.g. 5 GB) being imposed are determined by your academic institution, not Google. in this case we have an issue, because as you probably know the data on new 6 or 8 TB cmr drives is very little, because backblaze is going for the best density, that is cheap enough. and having vastly more reliable drives reduces the chance to ever need to use a backup and reduces the chance of a backup failing, when you HAVE TO use it to recover. I think the majority of people on this sub aren't much "data hoarders", but rather "data archivists/organizers". Meaning, we don't just download everything, we just like to keep our original data forever (family photos/videos, documents) and download stuff we like and keep it for later rewatch/replay (movies/shows/games).

Here's one for you: Put all of your data onto an un-replicated, non-backed up volume. Whenever you access a piece of data, copy it onto a replicated, backed up volume. Anything, natural, like the Thailand food or man-made, like Chia can cause drive prices to rise.a lot of so-called free downloaders online now are all fake, just to capture your attention to download them, and after installing them on your computer, they tell you that you can only download 2 videos without a premium, it's sucks. but have to admit that there is no free meal, so I paid. and I have to say, they are really good, really convenientIn my case, it's just the "packrat" style of hoarding: it doesn't fill my entire house, but it's knickknacks since probably around 1998, when I first got my own computer and started organizing data. I used to download stuff from the internet (when i first got broadband aka 256kbps permanent connection vs 33.6kbps that shared the single phone line of the house).

A bit new to the hoarding scene - wanted to get input regarding recommendations for NAS Systems and where I can better educate myself on NAS in general. I have several WD 8TB My Books that I would like to (learn how to) shuck rather than having several drives plugged into my wall lol.

My long term goals are to keep preserving and serving family photographs/videos and safely backup personal data, that's my number one priority. Other than that I'll just keep doing what I've been doing, making offline copies of everything I find even remotely interesting on the internet, expanding my storage when needed.

Synology or QNAP are pretty good out of the box. For editing videos directly from the NAS, think about upgrading your network between the NAS and your computer to more than just 1GBit/s. There are 2.5, 5 and 10 G solutions out there and good harddrives will usually be bottlenecked by 1G. Track your files’ integrity over time (make lists of file hashes using something like hashdeep).
