Start from the gas tank by the filler cap, and if I'm not mistaken, follow all the little hoses all the way to the engine. They should be located along the side (driver's side). There should also be a purge line from the canister to the intake system to purge the canister when the engine is running. the engine connection point depends on the engine and I am not familiar with the 89 4.2.The 4.0 liter AMC inline-six engine was first introduced in the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) in 1987, and was used in Cherokees and Wranglers until 2006.
