So instead of being too hot, the engine wasn't running up to temperature. For some reason this triggered the computer and set off the DIC message, though why running cool would trigger a 'running hot' error, who knows? Anyway, they installed a new t-stat and gaskets, topped off the coolant and I was good to go. For a grand total of $0.00 dollars.
